How GPA works
GPA (grade point average) turns your letter grades into numbers and averages them. On the standard 4.0 scale, an A is worth 4 points, a B is 3, a C is 2, a D is 1 and an F is 0.
So a GPA tells you your average letter grade, not your average percentage. A 3.0 means you averaged a B. A 3.5 means you're halfway between a B+ and an A-.

How to convert a percentage to GPA
Turn the percentage into a letter grade first, then read off its GPA value.
Example: you got 88% in a class. That's a B+, and a B+ is worth 3.3 GPA points. A 91% is an A-, worth 3.7.
To get your overall GPA, do this for every class and average the points. If your classes have different credits, weight each class by its credits. Need the letter grade for a percentage first? Use the letter grade to percentage chart.
The 5.0 weighted GPA scale
Many high schools give extra points for harder classes, so a GPA can go above 4.0. A common setup adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB classes:

Not every school does it this way. Some only weight AP classes, some add a flat 1.0 to honors too, and many colleges recalculate your GPA on a plain 4.0 scale when you apply.
Is an A+ a 4.0 or a 4.3?
On most scales, an A+ is worth 4.0, the same as an A. It looks good on your transcript but doesn't raise your GPA.
Some colleges give an A+ a 4.3. If yours does, a GPA slightly above 4.0 is possible even without weighted classes.
Frequently asked questions
What letter grade is a 3.0 GPA?
A 3.0 GPA is a B average. It's roughly 83% on the standard 4.0 scale.
What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?
A 3.5 GPA sits between a B+ (3.3) and an A- (3.7). It's usually read as a B+ average, about 89%.
What is a 4.0 GPA in percentage?
A 4.0 means straight A's, which is 93% or higher on most scales. Some schools give a 4.0 from 90%.
Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?
Most high schools and many colleges cap an A+ at 4.0. Some colleges give an A+ 4.3. Check your school's catalog.
Can a GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes, if your school uses a weighted scale. Honors classes often add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0, so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0.
Why is GPA to percentage only an estimate?
GPA is an average of letter grades, not of percentages. Two students with a 3.0 could have very different percentages behind it. The chart shows the most common match.
